Some of the innovations were aimed at eliminating the ambiguity of art while simultaneously increasing its practical benefits for the team. This review is devoted directly to the processing of types of artillery shells, the scheme of their use and interface features.
Three types of shells in the arsenal of self-propelled guns
In 2020, the idea of expanding the number of shells has already been tested. In addition to the basic land mines, special (with increased damage) and armor-piercing charges were introduced.
Players did not like this approach for the following reasons:
- preserved incredibly long cooldown when changing projectiles;
- unreasonably high cost of new types of projectiles;
- the absence of real changes regarding the equipment that opposes the gunners.
Now the choice is between two types of shells - basic and special. The second has only a slightly increased spread of fragments at a much higher cost. As part of the Sandbox 2021, not only will the characteristics of land mines be reworked, but a third type will also appear. Let's consider them in more detail on the example of the Soviet level 10 self-propelled guns About. 261.
1. Basic (high-explosive fragmentation with stun)
This is the easiest type to use, dealing reduced damage (-10% of current) but with enough splash to cover and stun multiple targets. Penetration will remain at the same level, but if the armor holds back the shot, no critical damage will be inflicted on the modules or the crew.
Among other types of projectiles, this one will have the lowest flight speed, but an improved hinged trajectory. Artillerymen will be able to cover targets behind hills and other obstacles with such land mines.
2. Alternative (high-explosive fragmentation without stun)
The best option for combating lightly and medium armored vehicles. Splash for alternative projectiles will be reduced by 2 times, and the damage radius by 4 times. Increases penetration by 50% of current value and damage dealt by 10%. This type of HE will continue to hit the internal modules and the crew, but will not be able to stun the target. It is characterized by a not as convenient trajectory as its predecessor, but the flight speed is increased.
The comparison table below shows the penetration rates for basic and alternative high explosives on some types of self-propelled guns that will be available as part of the Sandbox-2021.
3. Tactical (armor-piercing)
Option for selective use. It will be effective against slow and heavily armored vehicles that are not subject to serious damage from land mines. In the complete absence of splash and stun, it will hit the target from a much shorter distance, causing more damage than land mines when not penetrated. Armor-piercing shells are characterized by a penetration rate that is 4-6 times higher than that of high-explosives. They have the highest flight speed and unstable trajectory due to the small angle relative to the ground.
It is expected that tactical charges will be used only in 10-15% of cases. A relatively fast system for switching between shells will allow you to use them effectively, adapting to the situation on the battlefield.
The cost for all three types will be equalized in order to maintain an optimal balance of costs. This will allow you to take each of the shells into battle, as well as use them without thinking about possible financial losses.
Artillerymen will no longer be able to live with one type of shell in their arsenal. A system with three types requires their mandatory competent combination in the current combat situation.
Interface improvements: display and switching between projectiles
The changes to the projectiles have resulted in obvious innovations in the interface. The scoped view will now clearly display the currently loaded projectile. A special indicator will show whether a particular type, with its trajectory, can hit a point that is in focus.
The developers also got to the aiming mode. Now a quick transition to the view "from the trajectory" will be carried out through the mouse wheel. But the hotkey function responsible for this switch will not be removed.
The developers don't stop there. They continue to port popular modding products to the official game client. Now it has touched the display of the flight time of the shells, which greatly simplifies the warning shots for gunners who are familiar with the game.
All of these features can be tested, configured, and/or disabled via the game client's configuration menu.
Quick change projectiles
It remains to figure out exactly how the system for changing shells will be implemented. With new tactical possibilities, you need to somehow counter the long cooldown. As part of the Sandbox 2021 test, the Intuition perk will be responsible for this. It is being adapted to game changes, focusing on the main parameter - an increase in reload speed when changing the type of charge. With the maximum pumping of the crew, the use of additional rations and the installation of equipment, it is possible to achieve a mark exceeding 83%.
