Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is a Netflix animated project based on the infamous game Cyberpunk 2077. Its main essence is to supplement the existing plot, to reveal in a new way the world in which the main actions of the project from the CD Projekt studio take place, and to acquaint fans of V's history with new charismatic heroes.
To the surprise of the creators, the anime attracted not only gamers, but also fans of Japanese animation - the first season collected many positive reviews and high marks from critics. The characters were loved, and many people wanted to see the continuation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on the screens.
When will Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 come out
In July 2025, it became official that the project was given the green light to continue. However, it is conceived as a story with new heroes, but in the setting of the original game. According to the creators, it will be a story about revenge and redemption with a duration of 10 episodes. However, the release date of season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is currently unknown, but the release is tentatively worth waiting for at the end of 2026 - 2027.

Briefly about previous events
The anime takes place in Night City. On the screens is the future of a large metropolis. People are obsessed with technology and can no longer imagine their lives without it. David Martinez — the main character, whose mother is trying her best to provide him with a good future. Gloria works several jobs and does everything possible to pave the way for her son to an elite academy. But an accident crosses out these plans at the root, forcing David to say goodbye to his parent forever and follow the path of lawlessness.
Having accidentally learned that his mother worked part-time as an illegal implant trader, Martinez becomes the owner of the Sandevistan implant, which grants him unprecedented power and strength. On the train, the guy, left without money and expelled from the Academy for a fight with a classmate who bullied him, crosses paths with a girl named Lucy, who, having learned about his implant, offers to cooperate in pickpocketing Arasaka.
Due to using "Sandevistan" for too long, David loses consciousness and almost becomes a victim of corrupt doctors who want to "push" his metal, but a new acquaintance saves him and brings him to her home. So the guy becomes a member of the mercenary Maine's team, to whom his mother was supposed to sell "Sandevistan", and begins his path as a cyberpunk, and also enters into a romantic relationship with Lucy.
During the mission, the gang captures Tanaka, the chairman of Arasaka, to obtain information needed for the client. At the same time, Maine suffers from cyberpsychosis, causing him to unknowingly traumatize the hacker Kiwi, forcing Lucina to take her place. The mission ends with the deaths of Maine, Tanaka, and Dorio, Lucy and Martinez survive, and the latter becomes the new leader.
The second half of the series reveals Lucy's past, which was a test subject in an experiment to study the deadly old network of the Arasaka Corporation. This background has a direct impact on the girl's present, and as a result, she is kidnapped by Arasaka and Faraday. In order to save his beloved, David installs a cyberskeleton for himself, despite the risk of cyberpsychosis and his rapidly deteriorating condition.
The season finale features a showdown between Martinez and Adam Smasher, who was sent to execute the protagonist who had gone out of control. Lucy manages to survive and fulfill her dream of flying to the moon, but her heart is broken, because her beloved died in a fight with Adam, saving her.
What will happen in the sequel?
It has already been announced that the second season will be a completely independent story with new heroes and a different antagonist. The setting will remain the same, as will the connection to the game canon, but the project itself will be original. Perhaps a cameo of already beloved characters from the video game or the first chicken, which will undoubtedly please fans.
