Where to find Xardas

The route to Xardas's tower on the colony map

Xardas lives in his tower in the orcish lands to the south of the colony. A map of this area will be released later, so you'll have to navigate the complex terrain yourself.

Be prepared to face orcs, biters, and razortooths. If you spent skill points on stat development and learning combat skills, and also modified the armor, the monsters will not be a big threat.

Location of the gate to the orc lands on the map

There are several entrances to the orc lands, but the easiest is through the gate southwest of the Old Camp, guarded by two guards. Once you pass them, on a clear day, you'll be able to see the top of the tower rising above the cliffs.

Move forward between the rocks and you'll see the structure in its full glory. To reach the entrance, run along the path past the red orc banner to the climbing wall and climb it. The path ahead will lead you directly to the tower's entrance.

Learn a skill Climbing You can get it from the novice Theron on the coast of the Swamp Camp.

After completing the task for the demon Xardas, you'll receive the "Teleport to Necromancer" rune, and the barrier blocking the stairs will disappear, opening a path to the mage. Climb up to the necromancer's office by any means convenient and speak with him.

Walkthrough of the Xardas quest in Gothic 1 Remake

Finding the entrance to the necromancer's tower is only the beginning of the journey. The demon guarding it will only let you in on one condition: he needs the hearts of three golems. Find the elemental creatures and defeat them.

How to get golem hearts

To extract the hearts, you'll have to kill the monsters. Magical creatures have tremendous resistance to cleaving and piercing damage, making swords, axes, and arrows ineffective. Each of them can be defeated even with less powerful blunt weapons, but the most effective tactic is to use magic of the opposite element.

Golem The way to win
Stone Any blunt weapon with 50+ damage.
Ice Fire Arrow spell.
Fire Ice Arrow spell.

Even basic spells will do, so we recommend stocking up on scrolls or runes for "Firebolt" and "Icebolt" in advance. These can be purchased from merchant Kronos in the New Camp.

Xardas's demon might break, and you won't be able to speak with him a second time, so it's easier to go get the hearts early. Kill three golems and, with the spoils, approach the guardian of the necromancer's chambers for the first conversation.

Where to find the stone golem

The stone golem stands closest to the tower. From the entrance, turn left and run along the path through the gorge. You'll soon encounter the statue waiting in a small arena.

Equip a blunt weapon and engage in close combat. The creature has slow attacks, so roll behind it and attack. Periodically, it will teleport and attempt to hurl boulders at you. While it's preparing to attack, you can run behind the monster and kill it quickly.

Loot his body for loot, including a stone golem heart. You'll also receive an ore-infused root and 1,000 experience points.

The location for interacting with the remains may be highlighted incorrectly—don't rush to conclude that this is a bug, but try to catch the point from which the golem is being searched.

Where to find the Ice Golem

From the stone monster's arena, run back toward Xardas's tower. Halfway off the main path, between two withered trees, there's a branch that spirals upward onto the cliff to the right. Climb it and pass through the dark cave.

When the area becomes completely snow-covered, you'll see a cave entrance. Follow the icy tunnel and you'll find yourself in front of the second boss arena.

It can also be defeated with blunt weapons. However, if you have the "Fire Arrow" rune, you can kill the monster from a safe distance. If your mana is low, use a club first to reduce some of its health, then finish it off from afar.

During the fight, the creature will summon small golems—ignore them until you defeat the boss. Beware of freezing attacks, which can stun you for a long time. It's best to equip ice protection amulets and rings before the fight.

Upon victory, you will receive 1,000 experience points, the Ice Golem's Heart, and an additional trophy - an Ice Shard.

Where to find the Fire Golem

After defeating the ice statue, leave the arena through the opposite exit - it will lead to rocks that you can descend and jump into the pond below.

Climb out of the first body of water onto the wooden platform and jump down into the second one.

Climb the textured wall onto the ledge, then proceed to the right, climbing along the flowing magma. This path will lead to a cave containing the final boss.

Change your accessories to increase your fire resistance, and prepare the Frostbolt spell. In combat, follow the same strategy: drain the boss's health with blunt weapons up close and attack with magic from afar.

Victory will also reward you with 1,000 experience, the Obsidian Core trophy, and a Fire Golem Heart.

Should I lie to Saturas?

Conversation with Xardas

After arriving with three golem hearts to the demon Xardas, you'll receive permission to ascend to the necromancer's office. Speak with him, but Xardas will refuse Saturas's request. Return to the High Water Mage with this news.

Choice of answer for Saturus

There will be two options in the dialogue:

  • No, I didn't find it (lie).
  • Yes, and he said that your plan is doomed to fail (Retell Xardas's plan).

Both options will allow the story to continue, but lying will open the possibility of abandoning the quest to find the necromancer, which will cause it to failedA more reasonable solution is to convey the hermit's words and warn the water mages of the Sleeper's imminent awakening. This will complete the quest.

The next quest is The Exiled Shaman.

What to do if you can't talk to the Xardas demon

If you spoke to the demon before collecting the golem hearts, a bug may occur when returning to him—you won't be able to interact with him or initiate a conversation. This issue is common, and there are two solutions:

  1. Collect the quest items before your first conversation with the gatekeeper to complete his task in a single conversation. If necessary, load your save from before the encounter with the demon and replay the quest.
  2. Roll back the game to the version from June 5, 2026 through Steam properties or another launcher.

Rewards

While Saturas doesn't offer a specific reward for completing the quest, the journey into the orcish lands and meeting the necromancer in the Gothic remake is generally worth it:

  • For three killed golems you will receive 3,000 experience.
  • The Demon of Xardas will give you the rune "Teleport to Necromancer".
  • Meeting the mage at the top of the tower will bring you another 2,000 experience.

The hero's further path lies in the mysterious city of orcs, the way to which will be shown by the exiled shaman Ur-Shak.
