Mahjong in NTE: How to Play and Win at "Sparrow"

An explanation of the rules and tactics for winning one of Ethero's hobbies.

Table layout and game mode selection

The prototype of this board game is Sichuan Mahjong. It can be played in multiplayer with other people, and alone with the characters.

  • First, you need to choose a side of the table. Players take turns. counterclock-wise: east (E) -> north (S) -> west (W) -> south (N).

  • On your turn, a player must draw a tile and discard one of your choice. To score as many points as possible and win, you'll have to collect combinations of dice.
  • The game continues until all the chips have been dealt.
  • If you've already won a hand, you can lock it at any time (the "Win" message will appear, which you need to click). This won't end the match: continue drawing and discarding pieces—this can either add or subtract points.
  • If three players become 0 points, the game ends early.

Suits and numbering of dice

Tile numbering (symbols, dots, bamboo)

There are three suits in total:

  • symbols (hieroglyphs, wan) - red;
  • dots (coins, tong) - yellow;
  • bamboo (sticks, tiao) - green.

All dice are numbered from 1 to 9 and are automatically arranged in ascending order.

Tile skins change the images on them. For example, the "Sparrow" skin can make it difficult to read bamboo tiles.

Types of combinations

Each suit can be used to create one of three types of combinations:

Types of winnings

Winning in mahjong isn't about winning, but about forming a closed hand of four sets of three tiles and one pair of identical tiles. Its type is determined by where the hand came from. the last bone:

  • Normal (yellow) - the opponent folds a suitable chip.
  • From the wall (orange) - the tile is coming from the deck.

When you declare a win, the tiles in your hand are locked. You then continue to take and discard tiles—combinations can form during this process.

Give me three bones

Choose three tiles of the same suit, to pass them to the next player counterclockwise.

  • It is better to give away scattered figures of the type that is least abundant.
  • If you're inexperienced, it's easier to get rid of the hieroglyphs. Their order needs to be memorized, while the numbers on the coins and sticks equal the number of figures.

Choose a "gray" suit

During the game, the "forbidden" suit must be discarded first; after that, it cannot be used to form combinations. Also, to declare victory, there must be no tiles of this type in the hand.

If a player has a "gray" chip left at the end of the game, he becomes the "Flower Pig" and gives points to players with ready hands.

Choose the suit you have the least of, or none at all, in your hand (or the red characters if they're hard to read). The "forbidden" tiles, highlighted in gray, are located on the right.

Form your hand

To win, you need to collect four sets of three tiles and one of two.

  • The sets must consist of tiles of the same suit: they can be sequences or triplets (repetitions).
  • You can hold different suits in your hand, but they must match in sets.
  • Aim for a suited hand and build combinations. Before declaring a pong, kong, or chow, first consider whether they will break any established sets.
  • Don't rush to "win."

Fold your chips wisely

Each turn, players draw a random die and discard one of their choice (To throw a tile, double-click on it).

  • There are only four identical tiles in the deck. For example, if there are already two "3" tiles on the board, you can't make another Pon or Kong.
  • Leave tiles adjacent rather than scattered ("5" and "6" are better than "5" and "7").
  • Pairs of dice from "3" to "7" are more profitable because they form three combinations, while "1", "2", "8" and "9" only form two.

It's important to keep track of which dice your opponents are discarding—this helps you understand whether there are competitors for your suit. For the same reason, it's best not to reveal your hand too early in cooperative play.

Rewards

At the end of the game you will receive:

  • Fons — only if you have city stamina, at a ratio of 10,000 to 10 energy (the maximum value depends on the magnate's level). If you take first place and have 20 stamina remaining, you'll only earn 20,000 currency.
  • Sparrow Spheres You can farm without an energy limit and exchange it for cosmetic items. They are calculated using the formula: fixed reward for the final place + (total points - 10,000) * 10. If the value is negative or you finish in last place, you will not receive orbs.
