Despite the bright gaming year with many successful projects, there were also some bad games that disappointed gamers and deservedly took first positions in the anti-rating of the gaming industry. Some of the listed projects belonged to the famous series and had a good budget for development, but this did not save them from a resounding failure. IGM named the 4 worst games of 2023, and we will tell you what the players were unhappy with.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
IGN rating: 4/10
OpenCritic rating: 37/100
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has received a lot of negative reviews from both players and professional critics, and this is not surprising - there are practically no good moments in this stealth action game and the stealth was completely broken at release (essentially the basis of the game).
The passage takes an average of 13 hours, and many gamers note that they are very sorry for the time spent: references to the world of Tolkien cannot cover up the boring plot, terrible controls and poor performance. This project looks more like an indie hack from an inexperienced developer and, unfortunately, no patches or DLC will fix this - it’s easier to make a new game from scratch.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong
IGN rating: 3/10
OpenCritic rating: 24/100
Skull Island: Rise of Kong was able to surprise a lot of people: it’s not often that a high-profile project comes out that looks more like a big joke than a real video game. This title seems like a throwback due to its claymation graphics, outdated mechanics, primitive animation, poor platforming and boring battles.
The project is morally and technically very outdated - crafts of a similar level were produced decades ago. The special inflation of ratings ultimately did not help, and the rating of the next game about King Kong dropped lower than that of the failed game about Gollum.
The Walking Dead: Destinies
IGN rating: 2/10
OpenCritic rating: 28/100
The Walking Dead: Destinies managed to disappoint not only fans of the series, but also ordinary gamers. The opportunity to change the original plot of a serial film could not overcome the bouquet of shortcomings: terrible graphics, unfriendly gameplay, wooden animations and unsuccessful game mechanics ruin the comfort during the passage, turning the gameplay into an annoying routine.
Additional rage among fans was caused by unpleasant voice acting and the fact that in the plot several key characters are missing from the series - in the end, the video game looks more like a mobile application than a serious project.
The Day Before
IGN rating: 1/10
OpenCritic rating: 5/100
The Day Before was supposed to be an excellent MMO about survival in the world of zombies, but in the end it turned out to be the biggest failure of 2023. The trailers and developer promises are so different from the final product that the publishers have been called deceivers and scammers. Gamers' expectations were dashed for a reason: the lack of close combat, stupid opponents, constant bugs and FPS drops, monotonous gameplay, and basically the MMO component was lost, which turns the long-awaited game into a shameful hack.
The result was an extremely crude project about survival without survival itself, and at release even zombies were in short supply. It was not possible to feel any progress or a pleasant experience during the passage - it is not surprising that soon after the release, the Fntastic studio declared bankruptcy, and gamers asked for the game Refunds.
