In this guide, we’ll tell you where to find Palworld saves on Windows and Linux in the Steam, Xbox Game Pass and pirated versions, and we’ll look at how to transfer and replace saves.
Where are the saves in Palworld?
Saves can be stored in different directories depending on the platform you are playing on, as well as the store where the game was purchased. Next, we’ll tell you where saves are stored on Steam and Xbox on Windows and Linux.
Folder path on Windows
The path to the folder on Windows directly depends on which launcher the game was purchased through: Steam or Xbox.
When installing via Steam
Steam saves in Palworld can be found by following these instructions:
- Open your Steam library and find Palworld in the list of games. Right-click on the name.
- In the list that opens, click on "Properties".
- In the new dialog box, go to the section "Installed files". There will be a button on the first line "Overview", click on it.
- A folder called "Pal" will open, go to the following path "Saved" 🡪 "SaveGames".
The SaveGames folder contains all the save files. Alternatively, you can follow the direct path if you have not previously changed the location of the game files: "C:\Users\<system username>\AppData\Local\Pal\Saved\SaveGames". You can do this through the address bar of Explorer.
When installing via Xbox Game Pass
If you play through the Xbox service, you can find saves as follows:
- Open Windows Explorer, click on the “Local Disk C:\” directory. Press "Users", then select your username. Among the many folders there should be "AppData".
- If there is no AppData folder, you need to enable display of hidden elements. To do this, on the top panel of Explorer, click “View”, and then check the “Hidden elements” option.
- In the AppData folder go to "Local", then find the folder named "Packages", open it.
- Find the folder inside "PocketpairInc.Palworld_ad4psfrxyesvt."
- Next, find the folder "SystemAppData" and open it.
- After that go to the folder "wgs".
The wgs folder contains all save files for the Game Pass version. An alternative option for searching for a directory with saves is to enter the direct path to the folder in the address bar: "C:\Users\<your system username>\AppData\Local\Packages\PocketpairInc.Palworld_ad4psfrxyesvt\SystemAppData\wgs."
Path to folder on Linux
For Linux users using SteamCMD, the save file location is slightly different. You can find saves using the following path: "~/Steam/steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Saved Games/"
How to enable/disable cloud saving
While there are all sorts of local backups you can make if you know where your saves are, it's always a good idea to have cloud saves as well. This becomes especially important due to the extensive gameplay of this title. To enable or disable cloud saving, follow these simple instructions:
- Open your Steam library and look for Palworld in the list of games.
- Right-click on the title and then select "Properties". Click on them.
- In the window that opens, stay in the tab "General". In the third section "Cloud Save" there is a toggle switch located opposite the inscription "Enable save sync with Steam Cloud for Palworld". By default, this function is enabled, but if you want to disable it, click so that the slider turns gray.
If you want to check whether cloud saving is working correctly, and also want to make sure that local saves are synchronized with cloud saves, click on the game. To the right of the “Play” button there should be an inscription "Synchronized".
How to Backup Saves in Palworld
When creating a backup copy, certain difficulties may arise, since all saves are stored on the servers of the game developers' partners. However, the usual method of creating a copy of saves still works. To do this, just follow the previously indicated paths to the save folder, and then find the folder with numbers in the name. Move it to another storage, not related to the game.
How to transfer saves to Palworld
Transferring saves to Palworld seems a little more complicated than in other projects. To do this you need:
- Open the backup folder.
- Copy a save (your own or downloaded from the Internet).
- Return to the save directory and replace the old file with the backup or downloaded copy.
When replacing saves, especially when using someone else's saves, you should pay attention to two extremely important points:
- Make sure you have transferred all your data, including information about the world.
- When moving a world from one dedicated server to another, allow the server first create a new folder, then overwrite the files, throwing the necessary save there.
How to use pirated saves
There is only one way to transfer saves to Palworld from pirated to licensed. As described earlier, when using the Steam version, a directory of folders is created "Pal\Saved\SaveGames". It is necessary to transfer all saves from the pirate profile to the licensed one. It is recommended to replace all saves at once to avoid problems; in the future, they can be deleted directly from the Steam directory.
How to save a character on a dedicated server
When creating a world for other users, the game creates new player saves, leaving the host's save. To solve this problem, you need to go to the save folder, there is a folder "Players". Each lobby member has their own extension file ".sav". The host save file is usually named "00...001.sav", but on a dedicated server the situation may be different.
The best way to find your filename is to create a new character. After that, see what file was created, use its ID in the host file to restore the character. Often this process is only necessary to preserve the original host world.
