Rumors that The Witcher 4 will feature a completely new protagonist have been circulating among fans of CD Projekt RED's creations since the company announced the development of a new game based on the legendary franchise. Finally, the community received a clearer answer from the game director of CDPR: in The Witcher 4 Geralt will not be the main character, moving the plot.
The story of the famous witcher from Rivia ended in the Wild Hunt and the Blood and Wine expansion. In addition, the company decided to move to a completely new format for presenting stories about ferocious monster slayers. Therefore, even Ciri should not be expected to play the role of a key figure.
This decision, undoubtedly, may not please some fans of the game, but the developers of The Witcher 4 are serious - the team assumes that their desire to adopt a key feature Cyberpunk 2077tied to creating a personal character, can attract new players to the project, as well as reveal the story to fans of the “game” Geralt in a completely different light.
CDPR Game Director explains:
“Starting with character creation, our main goal is immersion - it's about allowing each player to choose their own path. While enjoying a role-playing project, the player should be able to create his character the way he sees it. The next part of The Witcher will follow this structure, offering the freedom that many may have dreamed of."
Thus, The Witcher 4 will become a completely new chapter for the “The Witcher” universe, which will offer atypical functions, capabilities and mechanics.

f**k cyberpunk, they should have made a better Witcher. Without Geralt, it wouldn't be interesting; the game would lose its meaning. But it would be interesting to see the golden age and heyday of the Witchers.
I actually like the idea of a new trilogy with a new protagonist, as long as the presentation and plot are on par with Geralt's. Unless, of course, they decide to make the game first-person again, like in Cyberpunk (for reference, early builds of Cyberpunk had third-person, and it was quite good). But that's a matter of taste. 🙂
They're also making a remake of part 1, so Geralt fans won't be upset :)

Well, at least they didn't follow the example of some other companies and shove obligatory SJWs/people of color/LGBTQMNs/underline as appropriate into the lead role.
However, there are still no pre-orders, and buying without Russian localization is basically a no-no.
A fourth installment without Geralt was inevitable; CDPR themselves hinted at this at the end of "The Hunt." A year or two after the end of the third installment, people fantasized about the new protagonist, perhaps from a different witcher school. But the developers seem to have decided to leave the choice of the new witcher entirely up to the player.
