Melusines in Genshin impact - a special female race of creatures living in Fontaine. Some of them live in Merusi villages, the other works as gendarmes in the Cour de Fontaine. They have their own perception of the world, different from the human one, and a rich lore that is tightly woven into the overall history of the Hydro Kingdom.
In this article we will tell you in detail who Melusines are and where they came from. We will also share in which tasks they appear and who served as the prototype for these creatures.
Who are the Melusines
Melusines are a unique race living in Fontaine. They have ears or small horns on their heads, and their distinctive feature is a long tail with a tassel at the end. Some individuals have small wings on their backs. Melusines have special vision, thanks to which they see colors differently and can find evidence left by criminals. Their aesthetic sense and taste are also different from human ones.
All Melusines are female creatures. Even Neuvillette issued a law in Fontaine, according to which only the pronoun “she” can be applied to them, and not “it”. Some Melusines work as officers in the Twilight Court in Cour de Fontaine, accompanying the Aquabuses and helping people. Others stay more distant, living in Merusi village, located in the depths of Elinas.
History of Melusine
Once upon a time in Fontaine there existed Elinas, a dragon-like creature believed to have been created by Reindottir. He loved the world around him and enjoyed it. However, his existence brought fear and danger to those living on earth, causing Elinas to fall and die in the Bello area of Fontaine.
His consciousness continued to exist, and one day a detachment of the Shadow Court and members of the Ordo Narcisseinkreutz came into his body, and a battle took place between them. The battle ended with an explosion hitting Elinas' body and creating many wounds on him. Thus, from the blood, the Melusines were born. Elinas loved his children, taught them everything and helped build the Village of Merusi within himself.
Thanks to their special vision, many Melusines work in the Twilight Court to help solve crimes. The creatures respect Chief Justice Nevillet, who in turn cares for and protects them.
One of the famous melusinas is Sijwin - nurse in Meropida fortress. Ordinary Melusines envy her for her more human appearance and believe that such changes occurred due to her work under water.

Prototypes of Melusine
In reality, Melusines are fairies from Celtic and medieval legends. They are spirits of fresh water in holy springs and rivers and are often depicted as snake women or fish women from the waist down.
In medieval texts, the origin of the Melusines is associated with Elinas, the king of Alba, who, while hunting, meets a beautiful fairy named Pressina in the forest. She marries him on the condition that Elinas will not enter her bedroom during the birth or bathing of the child.
Pressina gives birth to three girls and takes them with her, leaving the kingdom after Elinas violates her ban. Mother and children go to the island of Avalon. After a while, the girls find out what their father did and lock him inside the mountain, for which Pressina is angry with them. She banishes them and marks them with a spell to take the form of a snake from the waist down every Saturday.
